Look up code violations for any address in Chicago. Real data from the city.
Normal: The city inspects buildings for safety — structural integrity, fire exits, plumbing, electrical, heating, pest control. When violations are found, the owner gets a notice and a deadline to fix them. Inspections can be triggered by complaints (call 311) or scheduled reviews.
Broken: Some landlords ignore violations for years. Open violations mean the building has known safety problems that haven't been fixed. Tenants may not know about violations affecting their building. The 311 complaint that triggered the inspection is public data, but the follow-through often isn't visible.
Fix: Look up your building here. If there are open violations, your landlord knows about them and has a legal obligation to fix them. In Chicago, tenants can withhold rent for certain unfixed violations under the RLTO. Document everything with photos and dates. Report new problems by calling 311 or online at chicago.gov/311. If your landlord retaliates, call Metropolitan Tenants Organization at 773-292-4988.
